The nation of Denmark (or Danmark in Danish) lies just South of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and to the East of Poland and Lithuania. Although not located in Scandinavia, Denmark is typically perceived as a Scandinavian country. Denmark was known as an absolutist state since 1660, until becoming a constitutional monarchy in 1849. Today Denmark is an active member of the European Union through two off-shore territories known as Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The majority of Denmark's inhabitants today are of Scandinavian descent, mostly Greenland and Faroese of a population of approximately 5.5 million citizens. According to a study published in 2006 by UNESCO and the CIA, Denmark is the happiest nation on earth.
